Being A ONE Champion Is All About Serving Humanity

The One Champions programme launched in 2016 and with 20 young Nigerians inducted as the pioneer ONE Champions.  50 young advocates and professionals were inducted on the 23rd of February 2017 as the second cohorts of Champions. They were drawn from all corners of Nigeria due to their commitments towards sustainable development and passion for initiating change.

In the course of their tenure as champions, they have emerged as leaders, lobbyists and change advocates. Below are some exciting stories of the journey two champions took with us in 2017.

Wadi Ben Hirki

“Being a ONE Champion was neither a status thing nor just another shot at being a volunteer at another International body. It was an opportunity for me to genuinely advocate and lobby for the development of my community.” – Wadi Ben Hirki (ONE Champion 2017)

Wadi Ben Hirki was one of the 50 Champions selected to participate in the 2017 Nigeria ONE Champions program. Being a ONE Champion has been a life changing experience for Wadi. She has advocated for the promotion of better access to education in Kaduna State, North west Nigeria, she has taken her lobbying efforts for girl’s education to the ears and minds of influential policy makers including the president of France.

Serving as a ONE Champion has changed my life and made me a better person. I am now encouraged to raise my voice and fight for the less-privileged and marginalized children and women. It’s not all about being paid. It is more about giving your all and making positive impact. Through ONE, I have been able to achieve milestones which might have taken me years to achieve.

“At the Global partnership for Education summit in Dakar, “I was honoured to have been interviewed by Agence France-Presse, BBC World, and Aljazeera World about my advocacy work. The Highlight of my day was meeting with President Emmanuel Macron of France (who winked at me!) and President Macky Sall of Senegal. I was happy to see that they support ONE Campaign’s #GirlsCount “

Temitope with the Station Manager of Voice FM Ekiti, Nigeria

Temitope Awelewa

“Volunteering for ONE has given me the opportunity to be an active part of great individuals that are saving lives and ensuring a better society. It’s been a fulfilling ride for me so far. I’m grateful for this great privilege and I want to do more.”  – Temitope Awelewa

The Champions programme gave him the platform to amplify the call for the provision of better health care provision to local communities in his state, Ekiti. “The Make Naija Stronger campaign gave me the opportunity to lobby policy makers and even members of the State executive into making more commitment into the funding of public health facilities in Ekiti state.”

Temitope also used the opportunity to help recruit more members into the ONE campaign, something he says is one of his finest achievement as a youth advocate in Nigeria.

For many others of our ONE champions, the programme has either help them grow professionally or stimulated positive change in their local communities.
