Alec Litowitz is founder and CEO of Magnetar Capital, a leading alternative asset management firm. He also serves as chairman of the firm’s management committee and is co-head of the investment committee.
Litowitz began his financial services career in corporate finance at J.P. Morgan in New York focusing on the Financial Institutions Group. Prior to founding Magnetar in 2005, he was a principal at Citadel Investment Group, serving as Global Head of Equities and was a member of the management and investment committees.
He created and continues to be extensively involved with the Magnetar Capital UChicago Financial Education Initiative, an innovative high school-based financial education program. Since 2012, the initiative has used technology, teamwork, and competition to help high schoolers increase their financial literacy. To date, the program is in more than 700 Chicago-area high school classrooms and has been delivered to more than 14,000 students.
As an athlete and avid outdoorsman, Litowitz enjoys endurance and adventure races including triathlons and off-road mountain bike competitions. He completed the Perskindol Swiss Epic, a six-day mountain bike stage race with 500 riders in September 2017, the La Ruta de los Conquistadores mountain bike race in 2014, and the Hawaii Ironman in 2004. His interest in competitive sports led him to Dare2tri, a nationally-focused non-profit that provides triathlon and single-event training to young people and adults with disabilities, where he serves as board chair.
Litowitz graduated from MIT with a BS in Mathematics and Anthropology, and went on to receive a JD and MBA from the University of Chicago. While at MIT, Litowitz became the first All-American squash player in the school’s history.
